THE EIGHTIESThe 80's was dominated by the Postmodernism movement. a movement in the arts, architecture, and literature, that rejected the overriding truth and believed that the individual interpretation was most important of all [13][9]. It is key to understand that this sort of philosophy led to a wide variety of styles in fashion, music, etc, as people used their interpretations of the world to create their unique images. In essence, image became vital to the people of the eighties. Hair style, clothes, music taste could all be used to judge people. In a less general sense, the 80's saw the dominance of pop music, led by singers such as Madonna and Michael Jackson, and rock music, led by bands such as Europe and Aerosmith, as well an introduction of synth and house music [13]. The hip hop scene was in its developmental phase during this time being pioneered by groups such as N.W.A and Public Enemy and took off only in the very late eighties. In terms of fashion, jeans were extremely popular paired with other neon, loose-fitting clothing [13][9]. In terms of hair styling, the hi-top fade, which was used by Vanilla Ice, and the mullet were popular in men's fashion [13][9].

THE NinetiesCulturally, the 90's were a milder continuation of the 80's or as Kriger puts it "the cultural world of the 1990s had a lot less drama"[13]. The value of image and individualism were still there, but a lot of trends had been set already from the 80's that the people in the 90's began to follow. With the old and new music styles created in the 80's competing with each other, pop, rock, and hip-hop emerged as the most popular. More specifically in the pop genre, the teen pop genre was created with many boy bands being created to appeal to the teenage demographic [9]. The 90's also featured the rise of hip hop and rap music, which in part can be accredited to Vanilla Ice, himself [13]. Fashion remained quite similar to the 80's, with many men and women still wearing loose-fitting, neon colored clothing. The individualistic theme focus on being counter culture still remained Historically, the 90's were a great time for the people since the dissolution of the USSR created a great national pride and the overall economy was doing well with no major recessions [13].
